What makes precast one of the emerging construction technologies?

There are many things that make precast one of the emerging construction technologies:

  • Materials savings: It can utilize raw materials better, give exact mix design and create less waste in factory.
  • Better design and architectural freedom: It creates accurate design
  • Efficient production: Using precast also makes improved productivity both at site and factory with controlled process, fast production and reduced cycle time.

Quality is also key as precast makes better surfaces.

What are the key trends in the precast construction market as per the end-user sector in India?

Precast has always been a preferred construction method for industrial and commercial buildings.

For residential buildings, precast is gaining widespread acceptance in affordable housing sector due to the need to construct low cost as good quality housing needs to be built at a tight time schedule. End users are becoming aware of the inherent advantages of precast concrete technology like faster delivery, low repair and maintenance, home ownership cost and so forth.

This is reflected in private builders who are adopting precast technology for construction of MIG and LIG housing as well.

In 2011, the urban population was 377 million, or 31 percent of the total population. By 2025, 42.5 per cent of the population is estimated to be living in cities. How is the urban development going to change the dynamics of construction segment?

India is a developing country, and our urban population is growing 12 per cent every year. It is a very big challenge for government to provide good living conditions to our citizens. Government has to launch mass housing projects, in which maximum housing units could be constructed in minimum time span.

The construction industry is in transition phase, and it will get more mechanized. We can not construct so much housing units with traditional system. We can see different type of construction methodology in today’s scenario.

We have prefab, precast concrete, 3D printing, monolithic construction and aluminum formwork. We are very confident that concrete precast technology will be most suitable solution to cater future challenges.

Key challenges faced today in India

The key challenge we face is that customers want a very short delivery time for setting up precast plants. Elematic has set up its own manufacturing facility in India to reduce the lead time, transportation time and cost of basic moulds. Today we are able to deliver a site-based plant in 3-4 months. Such plants can produce 500-700 sq m precast elements per day.

Where do you see the precast technology in general and Elematic in particular by 2020?

Precast has a very bright future. Generally, off-site building construction methods are gaining popularity because of their inherent advantages and the need to mechanise the Indian construction industry.

Elematic in particular has 20 installations all over India, and we expect to double this number by 2020.
